A video I made for my sister. All footage comes from some ninja shooting at the California Academy of Sciences.
Hipstamatic for Video Tutorial - Final Cut Pro
Example: HipstaTurtle
If you want some music while you work - hit play to the right!
Step 1. Download my frame (1080p) or make one yourself. I did mine in photoshop. I bet you can do better. You might like to rotate it a little because hipstamatic frames are a little crooked. I’m kinda lazy so I left it.
Step 2. Make yourself a mask to give it that plastic lens look. Or just download mine (1080p).
To do this yourself, open up photoshop and create a new fill layer with white. When we bring it into final cut pro, the white areas will be the only areas where our filters get applied. The black areas get left alone. Draw a black area to the shape you like. To be authentic hipstamatic, make sure it’s off centered and kind of shitty looking. If you’re lazy like me, you can soften it up with a gaussian blur in final cut.
Step 3. Drop your video in the timeline. Make 2 more layers above it.
Drop your mask directly above your video.
Make a copy of your video above the mask.
Disable the clips so you can see the bottom layer.
Add a 3 way color corrector to the bottom layer. Lower the blacks. Brighten the highlights. Shift the white balance greenish. This give us the basic look.
Step 4. Enable your mask and you top video layer. Once we switch the composite mode, the black parts of the mask will block the changes you’re doing to the top video layer.
Add a gaussian blur on your top video track. I found around 27 to be enough. This will make the unmasked areas, the edges, blurrier than the center.
Add a 3 way color corrector. Drop a brighten contrast. You can tweak these after the next step.
Step 5. The magic step.
Right click your top video clip. Change the composite mode to Travel-Matte Luma.
Lower the opacity of the top track if you find the effects are too dramatic.
Step 7. Drop your border on top of all of it to seal the deal.
Add some filters to it because I was too lazy to make it look good in photoshop. I desaturated it and added contrast.
Bam. Now your videos can look as shitty as your iPhone pictures.

Welcome to the Stage Pilot Episode. If enough people like this pilot, or at least the general idea, I can finish a series. My plan is to have an 8-12 episode webseries.
